Welcome to the World of Aquaria

I know I should be posting more about my own tanks and what I’ve been doing with them, but this article is just too good to pass up. Apparently the boy was cleaning his fish tank and decided half way through that he needed to take a wizz. Fish in hand he went to relieve himself when the fish slipped into his urethra.
I am calling shennanigans on this one.
Do you know the impossibilities of this? The split second timing and precise angles to start things off are just unfathomable. This is a 14 year-old. He does not have the landing platform for this fish to land. Also, the fish was 2cm long and 1.5cm wide. That’s over half and inch wide and 3/4 inches long. No way!
This kid should go to therapy but for hanging his wiener in his fish tank.

I ran across this article about a man, who put a 50 cm (20″) long eel up where the sun doesn’t shine. He says it was to relieve constipation. This is just sick and wrong. You can check out the article here, but be warned there are pictures that I can’t decipher. If you’re squeamish, you might want to pass. As far as keeping fish, this guy should not be allowed to do so anymore.

I came across an article about some fish that have human facial features. The picture in the article isn’t very good, but it does look like it might have a nose. I would never want to keep these fish. Can you imagine them staring at you through the glass or poking their heads out of the water during feed time in a pond?
*Shudder*

Researchers have found a fish with a transparent head. It’s thought that the fish needs a covering over its eyes to eat jellyfish and not get stung. I just think it looks like the jets I used to draw as a kid with the cockpits.

This tank has a layer of diatoms as it is a new tank. What’s of more interest is the path a single Olive Nerite Snail has left in its eating wake. Algae eating machines.

Keeping aquariums has been a hobby of mine in the past couple years, but I think I’ve drawn a good line, not letting the hobby take control of my life. It has not been easy, especially with the fish related gifts my friends and family are constantly giving me.
A couple of fish themed key chains.
A mechanical swimming fish I got for Valentine’s Day one year from Michelle.
My friend went to Hawaii and thought I could use a Hawaiian shirt.
This year’s Christmas present. This one is actually cool. My goldfish is learning tricks.
If you bump this, these things sound like pots and pans clanking. It’s February, but this is my Christmas gift.
I like keeping fish. I don’t love fish. Take it easy, people.

I am all for treating all living things well, aside from insects, but PETA has taken it too far with it’s latest campaign. I won’t argue against the point they’re trying to make, but they’re doing it all wrong. Comparing fish to cats? There are so many things wrong with this.
Fish live in water. You just can’t get as physically close to the animals as cats. People are naturally going to feel more distant to fish. Plus if you tried to pet a fish you would remove its slime coat, probably killing it in the process.
More importantly, what is wrong with fish as they are? I like them more than I like cats. Sure you can’t hold them or play with them in the traditional sense, but I think they’re pretty darn interesting. They have individual personalities too.
I’ll keep my fish over cats any day. My fish don’t make me sneeze.

I have been having less free time to maintain my tanks. As a result, some of the smaller tanks are suffering. My Dwarf Crayfish tank has been building up a bit of algae, and it’s starting to look pretty bad. Fortunately I have a good friend that said I could move them to a new tank he bought for his office. It’s much larger and will be easier to handle the nutrient buildup with less attention.
The good news is that we picked up a 40 gallon and stand for seventy five dollars. The bad news is that our plans to build a custom sump/filter went out the door, because neither of us wanted to risk drilling a glass tank. Still we wanted to make use of some of the Java Moss he had overflowing from his other tank. You may recall this tank from my previous post.
Here is the moss we didn’t use from theĀ original tank. This is a pretty densely packed ball about the size of a basketball. We took this to our local fish store, but the owner wasn’t in today. The person in charge said we could come back tomorrow and ask about the credit. She just dumped it into the plant tank, which I’m pretty sure wasn’t the best idea considering how invasive Java Moss can be when it’s free floating.
Here is the tank. The water is a bit cloudy from the sand, but that should clear up with a water change. There are two fish in there to test the water. Crayfish will show up next week.
This is that sliver of red you see poking out above the rim of the tank. Since the crayfish will be doing most of their activity on the floor of the tank, this handy device spreads the flow of water from the filter across the top of the tank rather than straight down. This is just a plastic Folgers coffee container cut, bent, and pinned down by the filter.
There are gaps in the sand, left there on purpose for these black mats. They don’t look like much now.
From the bottom of the tank you can see there is a layer of Java Moss sandwiched in between the plastic mesh. Hopefully the moss will make its way up towards the surface, making nice islands of grass in the tank.

Behold the amazing Jello, short for Oranjello.

I have a friend, who helped me get started into the aquaria hobby. He wasn’t involved in the hobby at the time I started into it, but soon after I got started he jumped back in and got a 40 gallon tank for his office. This is what his tank currently looks like.
Welcome to Mt. Java Moss. I don’t know how the fish get around in this tank. I poured some fish out from a bucket into this tank and half of them got stuck in the net that is the Java Moss ball.
While this tank looks like mess, there is one thing I noticed. This tank is spotless from floating debris in the tank. I’ve never once seen detritus floating in this tank. It made me realize. Java Moss is the best filter floss you can get, and it’s self producing. I’ve convinced him that we need to run a crayfish tank and build a custom filter with Java Moss as the filter floss. I just have to find out when we have the time to start such a project.
