Detritus is the biological term for fish poop. People often wonder if there is some animal that will consume the waste of other organisms in the aquarium.

This is a Ghost Shrimp, and that bit of material he is munching on is fish poop.

While I’ve seen this occur on multiple occasions, these guys don’t seem to consume the entire waste. They appear to pick at it, most likely removing undigested portions of food still in the waste. This still leaves you with enough of an unsightly mess. Unfortunately, the best way to get rid of unsightly fish poop is to do a regular gravel vacuum.
